Getting married in Cannes: the town hall first, the beach second.

Who can have a civil marriage in Cannes, the procedure at the Hôtel de Ville, the rules for foreign nationals, then reception venues, season and budget.

The party is free, the civil marriage is not

You can celebrate your wedding in Cannes with no conditions at all. Getting legally married at Cannes town hall is another matter: the law requires a link with the town, and a hotel booking is not one.

The rule is national, and it is set out on service-public.gouv.fr (page checked on 16 September 2026): a marriage is celebrated in a commune where one of the two future spouses, or one of their parents, has their home or residence. For residence, at least one month of continuous occupation is required. Being born in the commune is not enough.

Our position is simple. If you do not live in Cannes and neither of your parents does, have the civil marriage at home and keep Cannes for the symbolic ceremony and the reception. It is simpler, it is perfectly legal, and nobody will see the difference in the photographs. If you do have that link, here is the procedure, then the venues, the season and the budget.

From the registry office to the reception

N° 01
Who can

The link with Cannes: home, one month of residence, or your parents

The City of Cannes sets four conditions: being at least 18, having legal capacity, not already being married in France or abroad, and one of the future spouses or one of their parents being domiciled in Cannes, or having lived there continuously for one month. Proof must be shown as an original: an electricity, water or landline bill. Service-public specifies that mobile phone bills and bank account details are not accepted. If you qualify through your parents, it is their proof of address that is required.

N° 02
The timeline

Three months ahead, by appointment, both of you

The town hall asks for the file to be submitted at least three months before the date you want. Submission is by appointment only, at the Hôtel de Ville, place Bernard Cornut-Gentille, at the civil registry office, and both future spouses attend together. The date and time are set at that appointment, according to the wedding calendar already drawn up: you propose, the town hall decides. The banns are then posted for ten days, and the marriage cannot take place before the tenth day after their publication. Town hall switchboard: +33 4 97 06 40 00.

N° 03
The file

The documents, and one detail that costs people an appointment

For each of you: a valid identity document, proof of home or residence, and a birth certificate less than three months old (unless you were born in Cannes or in a town connected to the COMEDEC system). For the witnesses, two at least and four at most: a photocopy of their identity document, and they must be adults on the day of the ceremony. The file can be downloaded from the marriage page on cannes.com. The detail: the office prints and photocopies nothing on site. Bring your own copies.

N° 04
For foreign nationals

No nationality condition, but extra paperwork

A foreign national can marry in Cannes as long as the home or residence condition is met. The town hall asks for a residence permit or a valid identity document from the country of origin, a birth certificate less than six months old and, depending on the case, a certificate of custom and a certificate of celibacy, usually issued by the embassy or consulate. Any document in a foreign language must be translated by a sworn translator registered with a French court of appeal, and an apostille or legalisation may be required depending on the country. The decisive point: according to service-public, two foreign nationals who do not live in France cannot marry at a town hall in mainland France.

N° 05
What the town hall does not do

The ceremony on the beach is symbolic, not legal

A civil marriage is celebrated at the town hall, in a room open to the public. The mayor may designate another municipal building, but not a beach, a villa or a hotel function room. The secular ceremony facing the sea, the one in the photographs, therefore has no legal value: it is held before or after the town hall, in Cannes or elsewhere. A religious ceremony can only take place after the civil marriage. This is not a constraint, it is a freedom: once the civil part is settled, the symbolic ceremony can be held wherever you like, on whichever day you like.

N° 06
Where to hold the reception

Four families of venue, four different logics

The large hotels on La Croisette sell function rooms, terraces and the bedrooms that go with them: this is the easiest option to organise from a distance, and the most expensive. The JW Marriott, for example, publishes a dedicated weddings page. The concession beaches can be privately hired, by day or in the evening, depending on their calendar. The villas and estates on the hills and inland, towards Le Cannet, Mougins or Grasse, offer space and gardens, with shuttles to plan for. Lastly, a privately hired restaurant in the centre is enough for thirty people. We have tested no venue as a wedding party: compare our pages on hotels and private beaches, then ask for a written quote.

N° 07
The budget

A national average, and the variable that matters: the date

The wedding industry report by Mariages.net puts the average wedding in France at 19,293 euros in 2025, for 90 guests, or about 215 euros a head, excluding the ring and the honeymoon. The average in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is 20,333 euros. These are regional benchmarks: we have no survey specific to Cannes and we will not invent one. What we have measured is rooms: in our September 2026 survey, the median went from 160 to 472 euros a night between two nights before the Festival and its opening. Your guests will pay for the date you choose. As for the town hall, neither the City nor service-public mentions any fee for the ceremony: the costs are those of translations and foreign documents.

What we avoid

What we avoid: paying a deposit to a reception venue before the town hall appointment. The date and time of the civil marriage are set by the registry office according to its calendar, not by you. If the civil ceremony and the party have to fall on the same day, the town hall is the first place to go.

What we also avoid: believing a supplier who promises a "legal wedding on the beach", or a civil marriage in Cannes for a couple with no home, residence or parent there. The condition is in the law and the town hall asks for original proof. The symbolic ceremony exists for exactly this reason.

Finally, we do not choose a date without looking at the congress calendar. On a Saturday during the Festival or MIPIM, your guests will pay two to three times more for their room, and some of the beaches and terraces will be hired by brands. Our trade show calendar gives the weeks to avoid.

Which season, which calendar

The season. May, June and September have the best light and a sea that is already warm enough, but they are also the months of the big events: the Festival announced for 11 to 22 May 2027, Cannes Lions from 21 to 25 June, the Cannes Yachting Festival from 7 to 12 September. The good windows are therefore narrow: the first half of June, the second half of September, early October before MIPCOM (18 to 21 October 2027). July and August combine heat, the highest prices and the fireworks evenings. Winter suits a civil marriage followed by lunch very well: it is when the city is most affordable. The minimal countdown. A year ahead, place a hold on the venue, without a deposit. As early as possible, and three months ahead at the latest, book the registry office appointment with a complete file. For a foreign future spouse, start with the consulate: the certificate of custom and the sworn translations are what take longest. The national rules are detailed on service-public.gouv.fr. They change: reread the page before submitting.

Weddings in Cannes, common questions

Can you get married at Cannes town hall without living there?

Yes, on one condition: that one of the two future spouses has lived there continuously for at least one month, or that one of their parents is domiciled or resident there. Without that link, the civil marriage cannot be celebrated in Cannes. Nothing, however, prevents you from holding a symbolic ceremony and the reception there.

How far ahead must the marriage file be submitted in Cannes?

The City of Cannes asks for submission at least three months before the date you want, by appointment only at the Hôtel de Ville, with both future spouses present. The date and time are set at the appointment according to the wedding calendar. The banns are then posted for ten days.

Can two foreign nationals get married in Cannes?

Yes if one of the two has their home in Cannes or has lived there for at least one month, with the additional documents: a birth certificate less than six months old, certificates of custom and of celibacy depending on the case, sworn translations. However, according to service-public, a foreign couple not resident in France cannot marry at a town hall in mainland France.

Can you get legally married on a beach in Cannes?

No. A civil marriage is celebrated at the town hall, in a room open to the public, or in another municipal building designated by the mayor. A ceremony on a beach, in a villa or in a hotel is symbolic: it has no legal value and takes place in addition to the town hall.

What budget should you plan for a wedding in Cannes?

The most solid benchmark is national: 19,293 euros on average in 2025 for 90 guests according to Mariages.net, and 20,333 euros in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. We have no survey specific to Cannes. The variable that weighs most is the date: during congresses, the price of your guests' rooms can triple.
