A festival, not a display
The Cannes fireworks are not one display: they are a series. Every summer the Festival d'Art Pyrotechnique lines up six evenings over the bay, fired from barges anchored off La Croisette, each entrusted to a different company, with at least twenty minutes of show synchronised to a soundtrack. The Palais des Festivals has organised it since 1967, and it is free: there is no ticket and no grandstand to book.
A seventh date sits outside the festival: the New Year's Eve display, fired at midnight over the same bay. Along this coast few towns fire at midnight on 31 December, and Cannes is one of the exceptions.
Our view is simple. The show is the same for everyone, the evening is not. It comes down to three choices: the date, the spot where you settle, and the way you leave. It is the journey home, not the fireworks, that spoils most evenings.
The Cannes fireworks, point by point

Calendar
Six summer nights: three fixed dates, three that move
The 2026 edition, the most recent, took place on 4, 14 and 22 July, then 4, 15 and 24 August, at 10 pm. Three dates return every year because they are pinned to the calendar: 14 July (Bastille Day), 15 August and 24 August, the anniversary of the liberation of Cannes in 1944. The other three evenings shift from one year to the next. One exception noted in 2026: the 14 July display was fired at 11 pm, an hour later than the others. The 2027 dates had not been published as of 10 October 2026: they remain to be confirmed on the festival website, usually in spring.

Competition
A contest, with a jury and a public vote
The first five evenings are in competition, the last one is not. In 2026 the line-up ran through a Serbian, a Polish, a Chinese, a French (Aquarêve) and a Finnish company (Joho Pyro), then the Czech firm Flash Barrandov for the closing night. A jury marks musical coherence, aesthetics and technical mastery, and awards the Vestale d'Or and a Jury Prize. The Audience Prize is decided online: after each display, spectators rate the show from 1 to 5 on the festival website. According to Riviera Radio, Finland took the 2026 Vestale.

Where to stand, with the music
The display is written to be seen head-on from the seafront, and that is where the music is played. The organisers announce light effects along 500 metres of shoreline. The Croisette beaches are the first viewpoint the festival lists, and the busiest: in 2026 the town expected up to 100,000 people on the boulevard per evening, while the Palais des Festivals speaks of more than 200,000 spectators around the bay. If the soundtrack matters to you, this is where to be, and early. Our article on La Croisette describes the line from west to east.
N° 04
Where to stand, with room to breathe
The festival lists four other viewpoints: Port Canto, at the eastern end of La Croisette, Le Suquet, the Californie hill, and the bay itself for those on a boat. You gain space and an overall view, you lose some or all of the sound. Cannes Radio, a festival partner, has broadcast the soundtrack live in past editions (91.5 FM, to be confirmed each summer): that is the answer if you move away from the centre. Le Suquet has one practical advantage: you walk back down to the Old Port and the station without crossing the crowd on the boulevard.

Getting there and back
The train rather than the car, and a return ticket bought beforehand
Cannes station is about five minutes on foot from La Croisette. On fireworks nights, boarding is regulated after the show: the time printed on your ticket becomes indicative, you take the train you can get on, and there is a wait. The festival advises buying the return trip in advance. By car, the Palais car park is closed from 8 pm to midnight on display nights: aim for Pantiero, Suquet Forville, Vallombrosa, the station or Palm Beach, and accept a slow exit. Palm Bus routes, including night lines N10, N20 and N21, serve the area.

Weather
A display can be postponed, sometimes twice
The barges cannot be set up in any sea. The rules allow for a postponement in strong wind, thunderstorms or a swell above one metre, announced the same day on the festival website and social networks. In 2026 the closing night planned for Monday 24 August was moved to Tuesday because of storms, then to Wednesday 26 because of the swell. One concrete consequence noted on the official site: train service on the rescheduled evening was heavily reduced. If your stay hangs on a single date, keep an evening spare.
N° 07
Winter
The town fires a display set to music over the bay on New Year's Eve, at midnight, with free access. The 31 December 2025 edition was themed around Marilyn Monroe, and the previous year's show lasted around twenty minutes. Details for 31 December 2026 had not been released at the time of writing: to be confirmed with the town. The crowd is smaller than in August, the cold on the seafront is real, and night trains are not the summer ones.
What we avoid
What we avoid: arriving by car at 9 pm and aiming for the centre. The Palais car park is closed, the others fill up, and getting out after the display is counted in long tens of minutes. If the car is unavoidable, park far and early, and walk.
What we also avoid: paying for a special evening on a private beach in the belief that it buys a better view. The fireworks are fired offshore and can be seen from the whole bay. What you are buying is a chair, a dinner and toilets, which can be defended, but not a different show. Ask the price of the evening before booking, it has nothing to do with the price of a lunch.
Finally, we do not pick 14 July or 15 August by default. They are the two most crowded evenings of the summer. Weekday dates away from public holidays offer the same standard of show (the competition is the same) in a town that is slightly less saturated.
Which date, what time
Which date to choose. For the lightest crowd, aim for a weekday evening in July or early August. For atmosphere, 14 July and 15 August, knowing what that involves. The closing night on 24 August is out of competition, but it is the one that comes with the prize-giving. In every case firing starts at 10 pm: by then it is fully dark, and still warm on the sand.
What time to arrive. We give no magic hour, it depends on the spot. On the central beaches the front rows are taken well before dusk. At Port Canto or Le Suquet the margin is wider. Smoking is banned on the beaches, and the festival asks you to take your rubbish with you: boats clean the bay after every display, and divers the next morning.
Cannes fireworks, common questions
What are the dates of the Cannes fireworks?
The Festival d'Art Pyrotechnique runs six evenings between early July and late August. In 2026: 4, 14 and 22 July, 4, 15 and 24 August, at 10 pm (11 pm on 14 July). 14 July, 15 August and 24 August come back every year. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of 10 October 2026 and remain to be confirmed.
Is the Cannes fireworks festival free?
Yes. The display is fired from barges in the bay and watched from public space, with no ticket. Only the evenings organised by private beaches or restaurants are paid for, and they do not give access to a different show.
Where is the best place to watch the fireworks in Cannes?
The festival lists the Croisette beaches, Port Canto, Le Suquet, the Californie hill and the bay by boat. Central Croisette is the only area where the music is played at full volume. Elsewhere you gain space and lose sound.
How do you get home after the fireworks?
On foot if you are staying in Cannes, by train otherwise. The station is about five minutes from La Croisette, boarding is regulated and you should expect a wait: buy the return ticket in advance. By car, the Palais car park is closed from 8 pm to midnight on display nights.
What happens in bad weather?
The display can be postponed in strong wind, thunderstorms or a swell that prevents the barges from being set up. In 2026 the closing night was moved twice, from 24 to 26 August. Postponements are announced the same day on the festival website and social networks.
