A month of lights, not a big market
The Cannes Christmas market is not an Alsatian market set down by the sea, and it is better to know that before you come. It is a village of wooden chalets on the Allées de la Liberté, facing the Old Port, with an ice rink, a funfair next door and lights that climb all the way up to Le Suquet. You can walk round it in an hour. What justifies the trip is the whole picture: a month of a lit-up town, mild in the daytime, and a fireworks display fired at midnight on 31 December.
We are writing this on 10 October 2026. The 2026-2027 programme has not yet been published by the town hall. Everything below therefore rests on the last edition we can verify, which ran from Friday 28 November 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, and we flag each time what remains to be confirmed.
Our view, up front: December in Cannes is best before the 20th. The village is up, the lights are on, the town is quiet. New Year's week is the busiest of the winter, and it only makes sense if you are coming for the midnight fireworks.
Christmas in Cannes, item by item
N° 01
Christmas village
The chalets on the Allées de la Liberté
In 2025 the village opened on Friday 28 November, with an inauguration from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and closed on Sunday 4 January 2026. The specification the town hall published for stallholders provided for 60 chalets, open from 11am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday and from 11am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry is free. You will find gifts, food to eat standing up and a Father Christmas chalet, open until 24 December. Children's workshops ran from 2.30pm to 6.30pm, storytelling at 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
N° 02
Ice rink
350 m² of real ice, 3 euros a session
The rink was set up in the village, on the same dates. Price recorded for the 2025 edition: 3 euros entry for a 45-minute session, skates included. Gloves are compulsory and not provided: they sold for 2 euros on site, so put a pair in your bag. Hours: 10am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday, until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Children aged 4 to 10 skated free in the morning, from 10am to 1pm, with the accompanying adult paying the normal rate. 2026 prices to be confirmed.
N° 03
Lights
The 2025 theme was Christmas baubles, in gold and cool white. The pieces worth seeing: a 32-metre illuminated tree on the forecourt of the Palais des Festivals, visible from 12 December, a giant 8-metre bubble at the bandstand on the Allées, and projections on the Tour de la Castre and the church of Notre-Dame d'Espérance, at the top of Le Suquet. None of it costs anything. The best route takes half an hour on foot: the Palais forecourt, the Allées de la Liberté, then the climb to Le Suquet by rue Saint-Antoine.
N° 04
Funfair
The Esplanade de la Pantiero, between the Old Port and the Palais, hosted the Christmas funfair: around sixty rides according to the 2025 programme. During the school holidays, from 20 December to 4 January, it opened every day from 2pm to 11pm, and until 1am on 31 December. Before the holidays, weekday hours were shorter. Here every ride is paid for individually: this is the item that pushes up the bill for a family evening.
N° 05
Parade and cribs
23 December at 5.30pm, and 150 nativity scenes
The 2025 illuminated parade took place on Tuesday 23 December from 5.30pm: a procession of about an hour and a half through the centre, with a band and dancers, between rue Meynadier and the Allées de la Liberté. Beyond that, a Provençal crib was set up in the village, and the church of Notre-Dame de Bon Voyage, a few steps from the Palais, displayed around 150 nativity scenes in the afternoon, from 3pm to 6pm, for part of the month. 2026 dates and route to be confirmed.
N° 06
New Year
Cannes fires a fireworks display set to music over the bay on 31 December at midnight, free to watch. The 31 December 2025 edition was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. You watch it from La Croisette or from the public beaches, standing up and in a coat: it is cold by the water at that hour. The town hall has not yet detailed the display for 31 December 2026. For where to stand and how to get home, our article on the Cannes fireworks sets out the method.
N° 07
What is open
The Forville market keeps its winter hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 7am to 1pm, closed on Mondays. 25 December and 1 January are public holidays: shops, museums and restaurants each decide for themselves, and we have no verified list to give you. Some of the private beaches on La Croisette close for the winter. The rule is simple: for Christmas Eve dinner, lunch on the 25th and dinner on the 31st, you book, and you check opening directly with the address.
What we avoid
What we avoid: coming for the Christmas market alone. Sixty chalets are quickly covered, and what they sell looks like what many Christmas villages along the coast sell. If you are after a large traditional market, this is not it. Cannes in December is chosen for the light, the mild weather and a town without crowds, with the village as a bonus.
What we also avoid: booking the week of 27 December to 2 January without a specific reason. It is the most sought-after week of the winter, hotels know it and New Year's Eve menus are fixed-price. If the midnight fireworks do not matter to you, the first half of December offers the same setting for less.
Finally, we do not drive in on the evening of the 31st. The seafront fills up, so do the car parks in the centre, and getting out after the display is slow. Arrive on foot or by train, early, and check the time of the last train home before you set off: the extra summer services are not guaranteed in winter.
When to go
The 2026-2027 dates are to be confirmed. The two markers of the last edition were the last Friday of November and the first Sunday of January. If the town keeps that rhythm, it would mean opening around Friday 27 November 2026 and closing around Sunday 3 January 2027: that is our extrapolation, not an announcement. The official programme generally appears in the second half of November on the town hall website.
The right time of day: late afternoon on a weekday. Night falls at about 5pm, the lights are on, the chalets are not yet full. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the busiest, because of the children's workshops. For the rest of the cold season, our page on Cannes in winter takes over.
Christmas and New Year in Cannes, common questions
What are the dates of the Cannes Christmas market?
The last edition ran from Friday 28 November 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, on the Allées de la Liberté. The 2026-2027 dates had not been published as of 10 October 2026. On the same rhythm, opening would fall around 27 November 2026: to be confirmed with the Cannes town hall.
Is the Cannes Christmas market free?
Entry to the village, the lights, the parade and the fireworks is free. What you pay for: the ice rink (3 euros for a 45-minute session in 2025, skates included, gloves 2 euros if you have none), the funfair rides, paid individually, and whatever you eat or drink at the chalets.
Are there fireworks in Cannes on New Year's Eve?
Yes. The town fires a fireworks display set to music over the Bay of Cannes on 31 December at midnight, free to watch. The 31 December 2025 display had Marilyn Monroe as its theme. Details of the 31 December 2026 edition remain to be confirmed.
What is open in Cannes on 25 December and 1 January?
Both are public holidays and there is no common rule: each shop, museum or restaurant decides. The Christmas village and the funfair ran throughout the holidays in 2025. For a meal, book and have the establishment confirm that it is open.
What is the weather like in Cannes in December?
Mild in the daytime, cool as soon as the sun goes down, at about 5pm. You walk La Croisette in a jacket at midday and get the coat out for the village in the evening, especially when the wind picks up. Our month-by-month page goes through the season.
