Cannes with friends: water, lunch, sunset

Boat half-day, plateau de fruits de mer, bar-hop in the Suquet — what actually works for a group of 6-10. By Iwona.

The case for a Cannes group weekend

Cannes is great for groups for one reason most people miss: the geography lets you swim, eat well, walk between five bars, and not need a car or an Uber. A group that stays in the Suquet or behind rue d'Antibes will walk to everything below.

The thing not to do is try to replicate a Saint-Tropez or Ibiza night — Cannes does not have it. What it has is a perfect daytime-and-early-evening rhythm. The six picks below assume your group is here for two or three days, not eight.

The six picks

N° 01
Boat

A half-day rental from the old port

Two hours minimum, 280-400€ for a group of 6-8 split between you. Pick up at Quai Saint-Pierre, anchor between the Lérins islands, swim, eat what you brought, return at 6pm. Better than any beach club for the price.

N° 02
Lunch

A long lunch at Astoux et Brun

Founded in 1953, the seafood institution near the old port. Plateau de fruits de mer for the table, a bottle of rosé, two hours, no rush. Service handles eight easily. Reserve.

N° 03
Apéro

Sunset at Plage de la Bocca

Free public beach, far less crowded than the Croisette, locals' choice for late afternoon. Bring rosé and chips, watch the sun drop behind Estérel, walk back along the seafront. Costs zero.

N° 04
Late

Bar hop in the Suquet

The narrow streets behind the old port — Le Comptoir des Vins, Mantel, La Pizza by the same team. Walk between three or four spots, finish at the Bar des Voyageurs near the station for the last drink. Each spot is a 4-minute walk from the next.

N° 05
Group

Beach day at Plage Macé

Affordable Croisette private beach: 35-45€ a transat in season, drinks and food on site, group bookings welcome. The honest middle ground between the free public beach and the 200€ Plage 3.14 experience.

N° 06
Active

Sea-kayak tour to Sainte-Marguerite

Three hours, around 55€ per person, departure from Mandelieu just west of Cannes. Sea-level perspective of the coast, swim stop at the island, perfect for a group of friends with mixed fitness.

What we'd skip

Big-club nightlife. The Cannes clubs are tired before 1am. Twenty minutes' drive west, Juan-les-Pins has the real summer party — and you can take an Uber back.

A group dinner on the Croisette. The menu is plastic-laminated for a reason. Walk fifteen minutes to the Suquet or rue Meynadier instead.

A bachelor party in mid-May. Festival mid-May closes off half the city, every hotel triples in price, you'll wait an hour for every drink. Pick June or September.

When to go

Best for groups: June, late September, early October. Water still warm, bookings still possible, prices reasonable. The shoulder seasons reward groups disproportionately because nothing is booked out and prices are negotiable.

If you must do peak summer (July-August): anchor the trip on a boat day (book three weeks ahead), reserve every restaurant before arriving, and don't even try to walk-in. The wait times anywhere central can break a group's mood.

Quick questions

EVG / EVJF in Cannes — yes or no?

Yes if you skip the Croisette nightclubs and build the day around water (boat + beach + sunset apéro + Suquet bars). Most groups burn out trying to do 'Cannes nightlife' — the city isn't designed for it. Daytime + early evening wins.

Where to stay for a group of 6-10?

AirBnB in the Suquet or behind rue d'Antibes wins on price and walkability. For hotels, the Five Seas can connect rooms, and the JW Marriott has true family/group suites. Booking a whole boat for the day often costs less than another hotel night.

Best month for friends?

June and September. July-August work but expect crowds and 30% surcharges on every booking. October still has sea-worthy water. May during Festival is fun if your group is into the spectacle, miserable if not.

Realistic per-person daily budget?

70-90€ for a relaxed day (public beach, lunch out, apéro on the beach), 130-180€ for a full programme with private beach and group dinner. Boat rental day comes out around 60-80€ per person if you fill the boat.
