Museums, exhibitions, theatre: culture in Cannes beyond the Festival

Four municipal venues at €6.50 or less, a season of more than seventy shows, four stages. What you can visit, what you need to book, and what is closed when you arrive.

The Festival town has a cultural season, and it is not in May

Cannes has a reputation as a town with one cultural event, twelve days in May, by accreditation only. The opposite is true: the Festival is the one time of year when culture in Cannes is closed to the public. The rest of the time, the town runs four municipal museums and art centres, a performance season of more than seventy dates and four stages of very different sizes.

Our view is clear-cut: culture in Cannes is an October to April affair, and it is cheap. A municipal museum costs €6.50 at full price, a seat at the Théâtre de la Licorne is listed at €10. These are the best value hours in town, two streets from beaches where a day runs past €100 per person with lunch.

This guide sorts it out venue by venue. The prices and opening hours below were noted in 2026 from the official listings of the City and the Palais des Festivals. They shift with the season and with each new hang: always check the day before.

Seven venues, from Le Suquet to La Bocca

N° 01
Museum

Musée des explorations du monde, place de la Castre

The former Musée de la Castre sits in the castle of the Lérins monks, at the top of Le Suquet. Collections of Mediterranean archaeology, ethnology and tribal art, plus three rooms devoted to Orientalism and the arts of Iran. The square medieval tower is climbed by 109 steps, in groups of 15 people for 15 minutes at most. Full price €6.50, reduced €3.50, free for under-18s and students. October to March: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-5 pm. July and August: every day, 10 am-7 pm. Note that the museum is closed for works from 14 September to 30 October 2026 inclusive. For the neighbourhood around it, see our piece on Le Suquet.

N° 02
Exhibition

La Malmaison, 47 boulevard de la Croisette

The City's contemporary art centre reopened on 31 January 2025 after renovation, with three times the exhibition space. It runs on temporary shows: in 2026, Carole Benzaken presented "Jam Session" there from 20 February to 21 June. Same price grid as the museums: €6.50 and €3.50. In October and November it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-6 pm. The venue closes between two shows (it was closed from 5 January to 18 February 2026): this is the address where checking the calendar before you set out is essential.

N° 03
Exhibition

Le Suquet des Artistes, 7 rue Saint-Dizier

The second municipal exhibition space, in the old town, a few minutes' walk from the Musée des explorations du monde. The two combine into a half-day with no transport. Price noted in 2026: €4.50 full, €2.50 reduced. Hours noted for the exhibition of the first half of 2026: Tuesday to Friday 2 pm-6 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-6 pm, closed on Monday. Autumn programme to be confirmed on the City's website.

N° 04
Island

Musée du Masque de fer et du Fort Royal, Sainte-Marguerite

The third municipal museum is on the island, inside the fort: the cells of the state prison and the underwater archaeology collections. Same price, €6.50 and €3.50, on top of the boat crossing. Official listings contradict each other on shoulder-season hours and on Mondays: confirm before you board. The historical background is in our piece on the Man in the Iron Mask, the logistics on our Lérins Islands page.

N° 05
Theatre

The Palais des Festivals and the Théâtre Croisette

The Palais's 2026-2027 cultural season announces more than seventy events from September 2026 to the end of April 2027: theatre, music, dance, comedy, circus, film concerts. On the theatre side, the bill includes Les Misérables, Cléopâtre, Les Rochambelles, Le Voyage de Monsieur Perrichon and Potiche (21 February 2027). Shows are spread between the Palais's own halls, including the Théâtre Debussy where the Orchestre national de Cannes plays, and partner venues such as the Théâtre Croisette, about 820 seats, inside the JW Marriott hotel at 50 boulevard de la Croisette. Official ticketing goes through cannesticket.com. Performances are in French.

N° 06
Theatre

Théâtre de la Licorne, La Bocca

The municipal theatre at 25 avenue Francis Tonner, on the western side of town. Its 2026-2027 season runs from 25 September 2026 to 5 June 2027, with listed prices of €10 full and €5 reduced. One example: the play Badinter, on Friday 5 March 2027 at 8.30 pm. It is the cheapest way into live performance in Cannes, and proof that programming does not stop at the Croisette.

N° 07
Small stage

Théâtre Alexandre III, 19 boulevard Alexandre III

The town's small house, east of the centre: a venue guide gave it 176 seats in 2017, a figure to be confirmed. It hosts live performance and the classical concerts of the Allegro Amabile series, for example a cello recital on Saturday 12 December 2026 at 7 pm. Worth watching if you prefer an intimate scale to the main hall of the Palais.

What we'd skip

Coming in May for the culture. Festival screenings are reserved for accredited guests, the halls are requisitioned and exhibitions take a back seat. It is not a bad period, it is a different town. We explain what stays accessible in the Festival for visitors.

Turning up on a Monday, or without checking what is on. Outside July and August, the municipal museums close on Mondays and over lunch, from 1 pm to 2 pm. La Malmaison and the Suquet des Artistes close between two exhibitions, sometimes for several weeks. The Musée des explorations du monde is closed until 30 October 2026. A two-minute check saves a climb up Le Suquet for nothing.

Expecting to walk into the Palais des Festivals like a monument. The building is not open access: it is a working convention centre. The simplest way to see the inside is to buy a ticket for a show. The steps, for their part, can be photographed from the forecourt, free of charge.

When to go

October to April is the real season. The Palais programme ends in late April, the Licorne's in early June. The municipal museums are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, from November to March inclusive. It is also the time of year when a museum solves a grey day: our when it rains page complements this one.

In summer, the logic flips. No more theatre season, but museums open all day: in July and August, the Musée des explorations du monde opens every day from 10 am to 7 pm, with a late opening on Wednesdays until 9 pm. The tower at 8 pm, when the heat drops, is the right slot.

Culture in Cannes, common questions

How much does a museum cost in Cannes?

The municipal museums (Musée des explorations du monde, Musée du Masque de fer et du Fort Royal) and La Malmaison list €6.50 at full price and €3.50 reduced, as noted in 2026. The Suquet des Artistes is €4.50 and €2.50. Entry is free for under-18s and students with proof, and for everyone on the first Sunday of the month from November to March.

Which exhibition is on in Cannes right now?

The two temporary exhibition venues are La Malmaison, on the Croisette, and the Suquet des Artistes, in the old town. Their programme changes several times a year and the venues close during installation. We do not publish a line-up we could not confirm: check the City of Cannes agenda the day before your visit.

Where can you see theatre in Cannes?

In four main places: the halls of the Palais des Festivals, the Théâtre Croisette (JW Marriott, 50 boulevard de la Croisette), the Théâtre de la Licorne in La Bocca and the Théâtre Alexandre III. The Palais season runs from September to late April, the Licorne's from late September to early June.

Does the Musée de la Castre still exist?

Yes, under another name: it is now called the Musée des explorations du monde. Same building, place de la Castre, at the top of Le Suquet, same 109-step medieval tower. It is closed for works from 14 September to 30 October 2026 inclusive.

Can you visit the Villa Domergue?

Only by reservation. According to the official 2026 listing, the villa at 15 avenue Fiesole generally opens on the first Saturday of the month for two guided tours, at 3 pm and 4 pm, priced at €8.50 full and €5.50 reduced. Dates and availability to be confirmed before you head up to La Californie.
