Eating in Cannes during the Festival: dinner as normal, despite it all.

Bookings, private hire, prices, hours: what really changes for twelve days in May, and the streets where the city goes on eating as usual.

A problem of geography, not of cooking

During the Festival, Cannes is not short of restaurants. It is short of free tables in the same place at the same hour. The Marché du Film reported 40,000 professionals in town for the 2026 edition, in a city of around 75,000 residents, and nearly all of them eat dinner inside the same perimeter, between the Palais and the Martinez.

The 80th edition is announced for 11 to 22 May 2027. For those twelve days, four things change for anyone who simply wants dinner: booking, private hire, prices and hours. None of them is hard to get around, provided you know about them before you sit down.

Our position: the problem is geography, not cooking. Ten minutes on foot from the Palais, the city eats almost normally. This page explains the mechanisms, then where and when to eat. We do not describe the practices of any particular restaurant: they change every year, and only the house can confirm them.

What changes, then where and when to eat

Booking: weeks ahead, not days

For the rest of the year, a table in the centre can be booked the day before, often the same day. In May, tables near the Palais go weeks in advance, and business dinners take the large tables. Three habits are enough. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, by phone or on the restaurant's own site. Ask whether a card guarantee is required and read the cancellation terms. Call the day before to confirm. Two covers are always easier to seat than six: if you are a large group, aim for lunch.

Private hire: open on the map, closed tonight

During the Festival, part of the seafront is privatised: beaches and terraces are hired for the fortnight, or for a single evening, and run by invitation. A place can therefore look open online and still be closed to you on the night you turn up. The beach restaurants on La Croisette are the most affected, followed by hotel terraces and rooftops. The only reliable check is a phone call on the day. Our article on the Festival for visitors sets out what stays open without a badge.

Prices: read the menu outside before you go in

We have no record of restaurant bills during the Festival, and we will not make one up. The mechanism, however, is well known: the menu gets shorter, a single set menu appears, turnover comes first. Your protection is a legal one. In France, a restaurant must display its menus outside, with prices that include service. Read before you push the door, and compare with our off-Festival ranges in eating in Cannes, the real prices. A menu that only exists for these twelve days deserves a question.

Hours: the city eats in two waves

The Festival sets the evening by its screenings. Programmes from past editions put the gala screenings in the Grand Théâtre Lumière at around 7pm and 10pm (times to be checked each year), and the Cinéma de la Plage starts at 9.30pm. The result: one wave eats before, another after, and the 8pm to 10pm slot is the most contested near the Palais. Aim for the start of evening service, usually around 7pm. For a late dinner, ask the restaurant how late the kitchen takes orders: do not assume.

Where · on foot

Forville, Meynadier, rue Hoche: the centre that carries on

Behind the Forville market and in the pedestrian centre, restaurants live on local custom, and it does not vanish in May. This is where the best rating-to-price addresses in our notebook are found, ten minutes on foot from the Palais. The Forville market hall is open Tuesday to Sunday, 7am to 1pm, from September to June: on Mondays it is handed over to antique dealers. Our pages on market tables and restaurants by district give the addresses, street by street.

République, Carnot, La Bocca, Le Cannet: leave the perimeter

The pressure is very local. In our hotel survey of September 2026, within 500 metres of the Palais about one hotel in thirteen was still selling rooms for Festival week, against nearly one in two beyond two kilometres. Restaurants follow the same geography. Boulevard de la République and boulevard Carnot, where Cannes residents live, are a quarter of an hour away on foot. La Bocca, to the west, is one regional train stop away. Le Cannet, just above, is a separate town with tables of its own.

When

Lunch, and dinner on the sand

Lunch is markedly easier than dinner during the fortnight: the professionals are in screenings or meetings, and the market tables are at their best at midday. The other solution needs no booking at all. The Cinéma de la Plage screens a film every evening on Macé beach, free of charge, at 9.30pm, and you need to arrive an hour and a half early to hope for a deckchair. Shop at Forville in the morning and eat on the sand while you wait for the screening. It is the most Cannes meal of the fortnight, and the cheapest.

What we avoid

What we avoid: turning up at 8.30pm, without a booking, between the Palais and rue d'Antibes. That is the hour and the place where demand is highest in the whole year. You will end up at the only table left free, and it is rarely free by chance.

What we also avoid: sitting down without having read the menu displayed outside, and accepting a "Festival special" menu without asking whether the usual one still exists. There is nothing rude about asking. If the answer is vague, one street further on somebody is cooking their year-round menu.

Finally, we do not cross the city by car for dinner. Traffic is rerouted around the Palais and parking becomes a sport. On foot from the centre, or by train from La Bocca and the neighbouring towns, the trip is shorter and more predictable.

Which day, which hour

The right calendar. The 80th edition is announced for 11 to 22 May 2027: check the dates on the official site before booking anything. The week before and the week after are already different from the rest of the year, with build-up and dismantling. Within the day, two windows work: lunch, then dinner at 7pm sharp. And remember Monday: on that day, outside summer, the Forville hall sells no vegetables.

If your dates are free. June and September offer the same sea and the same light without the fortnight. Watch out, though, for Cannes Lions week, announced for 21 to 25 June 2027, when a large share of the beaches and terraces on La Croisette is again hired by brands. Our trade show calendar lists the weeks to work around, and the best time to visit Cannes compares the months.

Dinner during the Festival, common questions

Do you need to book dinner in Cannes during the Festival?

Yes, near the Palais and on La Croisette, and weeks ahead rather than days. Ask whether a card guarantee is required, read the cancellation terms and reconfirm the day before. In the streets around the Forville market and on the residential boulevards, arriving at the start of service is more often enough.

Do restaurants raise their prices during the Cannes Film Festival?

We have no record of bills to state that restaurant by restaurant. What is documented is hotels: in our September 2026 survey, the median room went from 160 euros two nights before to 472 euros on opening night. For restaurants, the observed mechanism is a shorter menu and a single set menu. The defence is a legal one: prices must be displayed outside, service included.

Where can you eat without a booking during the Cannes Film Festival?

Away from the seafront: around the Forville market and rue Meynadier, on rue Hoche, on boulevard de la République and boulevard Carnot, in La Bocca or in Le Cannet. Come at lunch or at the start of evening service, around 7pm. The pressure is concentrated within 500 metres of the Palais.

Can you have dinner on a Croisette beach during the Festival?

Sometimes, but this is the category hit hardest by private hire: a beach may be hired for the fortnight or for one evening, and run by invitation. Call on the day. The free alternative is the Cinéma de la Plage, on Macé beach, where you can picnic while waiting for the 9.30pm screening.

What time should you eat dinner in Cannes during the Festival?

Early, around 7pm, at the start of service, or after the first wave. Gala screenings are generally held at around 7pm and 10pm according to programmes from past editions, which makes 8pm to 10pm the busiest slot near the Palais. For a late dinner, phone to check the time of last orders.
